Sunnah and Bid'ah are two terms that have been subjected to much misinterpretation. Let us analyze what Sunnah is and what Bid'ah is, using [Islamic] sources and the explanations of the Imams.

Different Meanings of Sunnah
The term "Sunnah" is used in five senses.

1. Linguistically, the term Sunnah is used to mean "path" or "custom." (Al-Ta'rifat li al-Imam al-Jurjani, 125)

2. In the terminology of jurisprudents (scholars of Fiqh), the term the term Sunnah refers to an act that is recommended (mustahabb) in Islam, meaning it is rewarded if done but not punishable if omitted.

3. In the terminology of the scholars of Ilm al-Usul (Principles of Jurisprudence), it is used for two meanings:

A non-obligatory act.

The sayings, actions, and tacit approvals of the noble Prophet (ﷺ).

4. In the terminology of Hadith scholars, it is used for the sayings, actions, tacit approvals, characteristics, and biography of the Prophet (ﷺ).

5. In the terminology of scholars of 'Aqidah (creed/theology), Sunnah is used for matters that have a Shar'i Daleel (legal proof).

Here, the fifth meaning of Sunnah mentioned and its opposite, Bid'ah, are the subjects of our discussion.

Sunnah and Bid'ah
Bid'ah refers to things newly introduced into the Din (religion) without the backing of Shar'i proofs. Matters that have the backing of Shar'i proofs are called Sunnah. Imam Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani (﵀) clarifies this:

والمحدثات بفتح الدال جمع محدثة والمراد بها ما أحدث وليس له أصل في الشرع ويسمى في عرف الشرع بدعة وما كان له أصل يدل عليه الشرع فليس ببدعة ) فتح الباري ٢٥٣/١٣)

Bid'ah in the Linguistic Sense
Linguistically, Bid'ah is divided into two types:

بدعة حسنة (Bid'ah Hasanah) - Good Bid'ah

بدعة قبيحة (Bid'ah Qabihah) - Bad Bid'ah

Imam Asqalani (﵀) says:
In the technical usage of the Shari'ah, there is only one type of Bid'ah, meaning only reprehensible Bid'ah exists. However, in the linguistic sense, Bid'ah means "created without prior precedent." This can be good or bad. The "Muhdathat" in the Hadith reported by Aisha (﵂), "من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو رد" (Whoever innovates something in this matter of ours that is not part of it, will have it rejected), should be understood in this way.

قال الإمام ابن حجر العسقلاني: البدعة في عرف الشرع مذمومة بخلاف اللغة فإن كل شيء أحدث على غير مثال يسمى بدعة سواء كان محمودا أو مذموما وكذا القول في المحدثة وفي الأمر المحدث الذي ورد في حديث عائشة من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو رد) فتح الباري ٢٥٣/١٣)

Imam Ibn Hajar al-Haytami (﵀) says:

قال الإمام ابن حجر الهيتمي: وَمن قسمهَا من الْعلمَاء إِلَى حسن وَغير حسن فَإِنَّمَا قسم الْبِدْعَة اللُّغَوِيَّة وَمن قَالَ كل بِدعَة ضَلَالَة فَمَعْنَاه الْبِدْعَة الشَّرْعِيَّة.

(Imam Ibn Hajar al-Haytami said: And those scholars who divided it into good and not good, they only divided linguistic Bid'ah. And whoever said, "Every Bid'ah is misguidance," its meaning is Shar'i Bid'ah.) (Al-Fatawa al-Hadithiyyah, 200)

Imam Shafi'i (﵀) says:
Imam Bayhaqi (﵀) is seen narrating from Imam Shafi'i (﵀): "Muhdasat (newly innovated matters) are of two types: Newly innovated matters that contradict the Quran, Sunnah, Athar (narrations from Companions), or Ijma' (scholarly consensus) are misguided Bid'ah. However, good things newly formulated in a way that does not contradict these are good Bid'ah."
Imam Nawawi's (﵀) teacher, Imam Abu Shama (﵀), in his book written specifically to oppose Bid'ah, dedicates a chapter to classifying Bid'ah in this manner.

قال الإمام أبو شامة :فصل في تقسيم الحوادث الى بدع مستحسنة والى بدع مستقبحة
ثم الحوادث منقسمة الى بدع مستحسنة والى بدع مستقبحة قال حرملة ابن يحيى سمعت الشافعي رحمه الله تعالى يقول البدعة بدعتان بدعة محمودة وبدعة مذمومة فما وافق السنة فهو محمود وما خالف السنة فهو مذموم واحتج
يقول عمر رضى الله عنه في قيام رمضان نعمت البدعة وقال الربيع قال الشافعي رحمه الله تعالى المحدثات من الأمور ضربان أحدهما ما أحدث يخالف كتابا أو سنة أو اجماعا أو أثرا فهذه البدعة الضلالة والثاني ما أحدث من الخير لا خلاف فيه لواحد من هذا فهي محدثة غير مذمومة وقد قال عمر رضى الله عنه في قيام شهر رمضان نعمت البدعة هذه يعني إنها محدثة لم تكن وإذا كانت فليس فيها رد لما مضى.)الباعث على إنكار البدع والحوادث ٢٣،٢٢(

Sultan al-Ulama Classifies Bid'ah:
Sultan al-Ulama Imam Izzuddin ibn Abd al-Salam (﵀) classifies Bid'ah into Wajib (obligatory), Haram (forbidden), Sunnah (recommended), Makrooh (reprehensible), and Halal (permissible).

قال الإمام النووي: قال الشيخ الإمام المجمع على إمامته وجلالته وتمكنه في أنواع العلوم وبراعته أبو محمد عبد العزيز بن عبد السلام ورضي عنه في آخر كتاب “القواعد”
البدعة منقسمة إلى: واجبة، ومحرمة، ومندوبة، ومكروهة، ومباحة. قال: والطريق في ذلك أن تعرض البدعة على قواعد الشريعة، فإن دخلت في قواعد الإيجاب فهي واجبة، أو في قواعد التحريم فمحرمة، أو الندب فمندوبة، أو المكروه فمكروهة، أو المباح فمباحة.

Imam Abu Shama (﵀) authored a book titled الباعث على إنكار البدع والحوادث (Al-Ba'ith 'ala Inkar al-Bida' wa al-Hawadith - The Impetus for Denouncing Innovations and Novelties) specifically to oppose Bid'ah. In it, the great scholar clarifies:

قال الإمام أبو شامة*: وأما البدع المستقبحة فهي التي أردنا نفيها بهذا الكتاب وانكارها وهي كل ما كان مخالفا للشريعة أو ملتزما لمخالفتها وذلك منقسم الى محرم ومكروه ويختلف ذلك بإختلاف الوقائع وبحسب ما به من مخالفة الشريعة تارة ينتهي ذلك الى ما يوجب التحريم وتارة لا يتجاوز صفة كراهة التنزيه وكل فقيه موفق يتمكن بعون الله من التمييز بين القسمين مهما رسخت قدمه في إيمانة وعلمه)الباعث على إنكار البدع والحوادث ٢٥)

(Imam Abu Shama (﵀) said: As for reprehensible Bid'ahs, they are what we intended to negate and denounce with this book. They are everything that is contrary to the Shari'ah or adheres to contradicting it. And that is divided into Haram (forbidden) and Makrooh (reprehensible). (Al-Ba'ith 'ala Inkar al-Bida' wa al-Hawadith, 25)

Even the Wahhabi leader Ibn Taymiyyah accepts this classification of Bid'ah. He also clarifies that Bid'ah Hasanah is Sunnah.

قال ابن تيمية:* كل بدعة ليست واجبة ولا مستحبة فهي بدعة سيئة وهي ضلالة باتفاق المسلمين ومن قال في بعض البدع إنها بدعة حسنة فإنما ذلك إذا قام دليل شرعي أنها مستحبة فأما ما ليس بمستحب ولا واجب فلا يقول أحد من المسلمين إنها من الحسنات التي يتقرب بها إلى الله. ومن تقرب إلى الله بما ليس من الحسنات المأمور بها أمر إيجاب ولا استحباب فهو ضال متبع للشيطان وسبيله من سبيل الشيطان )مجموع الفتاوى ١٦٢/١

(Ibn Taymiyyah said: (Majmu' al-Fatawa 1/162)

From the above explanations, it is clear that Bid'ah is what is newly innovated without the backing of the Shari'ah, and that which is newly innovated with the backing of the Shari'ah is not a Bid'ah to be opposed.
The Prophet (ﷺ) himself clearly taught that what is to be rejected are newly innovated matters that have no backing in the Din.
A Sahabi does something the Prophet (ﷺ) did not explicitly teach:
Imam Bukhari (﵀) narrates:

: «أن النبي ﷺ قال لبلال عند صلاة الفجر: يا بلال، حدثني بأرجى عمل عملته في الإسلام، فإني سمعت دف نعليك بين يدي في الجنة. قال: ما عملت عملا أرجى عندي: أني لم أتطهر طهورا في ساعة ليل أو نهار، إلا صليت بذلك الطهور ما كتب لي أن أصلي» قال أبو عبد الله: دف نعليك، يعني تحريك. )صحيح البخاري: ١١٤٩)

When the Prophet (ﷺ) asked Bilal (﵁) about the deed that gave him the most hope in the Hereafter, after hearing the sound of Bilal's (RA) sandals in Paradise, the respected [Bilal] said: "Whenever I perform ablution, I pray."
The Prophet (ﷺ) had not taught such a prayer before this, yet the Prophet (ﷺ) approved of it.
It is clear from this Hadith that Bilal (﵁) was the first to offer two Rak'ahs of Sunnah prayer after Wudu (ablution) before a clear command from the Shari'ah.

In another Hadith narrated by Imam Bukhari (﵀), it is seen:
When the Prophet (ﷺ) rose from Ruku' (bowing), a Sahabi behind him said: ربنا لك الحمد حمدا كثيرا طيبا مباركا فيه and after the prayer, the Prophet (ﷺ) approved of this.

وفي صحيح البخاري:* عن رفاعة بن رافع الزرقي قال: «كنا يوما نصلي وراء النبي ﷺ، فلما رفع رأسه من الركعة قال: سمع الله لمن حمده. قال رجل وراءه: ربنا ولك الحمد حمدا كثيرا طيبا مباركا فيه، فلما انصرف قال: من المتكلم؟. قال: أنا، قال: رأيت بضعة وثلاثين ملكا يبتدرونها، أيهم يكتبها أول»(صحيح البخاري ٧٧٩)

In another Hadith narrated by Imam Bukhari (﵀), it is seen:
There was a Sahabi who used to recite Surah al-Ikhlas in every Rak'ah in addition to the designated Surah. When this was brought to the attention of the Prophet (ﷺ) as a complaint, the Prophet (ﷺ) declared that the Sahabi's fondness for that Surah would lead him to Paradise.

Another incident narrated by Imam Bukhari (﵀) himself:

وفي صحيح البخاري: عن أنس رضي الله عنه: كان رجل من الأنصار يؤمهم في مسجد قباء وكان كلما افتتح سورة يقرأ بها لهم في الصلاة مما يقرأ به افتتح ب ﴿قل هو الله أحد﴾ حتى يفرغ منها ثم يقرأ سورة أخرى معها وكان يصنع ذلك في كل ركعة فكلمه أصحابه فقالوا إنك تفتتح بهذه السورة ثم لا ترى أنها تجزئك حتى تقرأ بأخرى فإما تقرأ بها وإما أن تدعها وتقرأ بأخرى فقال ما أنا بتاركها إن أحببتم أن أؤمكم بذلك فعلت وإن كرهتم تركتكم وكانوا يرون أنه من أفضلهم وكرهوا أن يؤمهم غيره فلما أتاهم النبي ﷺ أخبروه الخبر فقال يا فلان ما يمنعك أن تفعل ما يأمرك به أصحابك وما يحملك على لزوم هذه السورة في كل ركعة فقال إني أحبها فقال حبك إياها أدخلك الجنة) صحيح البخاري (٧٧٤))

The Prophet (ﷺ) had not shown a practice of reciting Surah al-Ikhlas in this manner regularly in prayer. Yet, the Prophet (ﷺ) approved of that Sahabi's action. (Bukhari.774)

When many Qaris (reciters of the Quran) were martyred in the Battle of Yamama, Umar (﵁), fearing that the Quran would be lost, decided to compile the Quran and discussed it with Abu Bakr Siddiq (﵁). At first, he hesitated and asked, "How can I do something that the Prophet (ﷺ) did not do?" Later, the great scholar [Abu Bakr (﵁)] agreed and then asked Zayd ibn Thabit (﵁), the scribe of revelation, to compile the Quran. The respected [Zayd (﵁)] also hesitated at first and asked, "How can you do something that the Prophet (ﷺ) did not do?" and later agreed and compiled it. (Bukhari.4679)

عن الزهري قال: أخبرني ابن السباق: أن زيد بن ثابت الأنصاري رضي الله عنه، وكان ممن يكتب الوحي، قال: أرسل إلي أبو بكر مقتل أهل اليمامة، وعنده عمر، فقال أبو بكر: إن عمر أتاني فقال: إن القتل قد استحر يوم اليمامة بالناس، وإني أخشى أن يستحر القتل بالقراء في المواطن، فيذهب كثير من القرآن، إلا أن تجمعوه، وإني لأرى أن تجمع القرآن، قال أبو بكر: قلت لعمر: كيف أفعل شيئا لم يفعله رسول الله ﷺ؟ فقال عمر: هو والله خير، فلم يزل عمر يراجعني فيه حتى شرح الله لذلك صدري، ورأيت الذي رأى عمر، قال زيد بن ثابت: وعمر عنده جالس لا يتكلم، فقال أبو بكر: إنك رجل شاب عاقل ولا نتهمك، كنت تكتب الوحي لرسول الله ﷺ فتتبع القرآن فاجمعه. فوالله لو كلفني نقل جبل من الجبال ما كان أثقل علي مما أمرني به من جمع القرآن. قلت: كيف تفعلان شيئا لم يفعله النبي ﷺ؟ فقال أبو بكر: هو والله خير، فلم أزل أراجعه حتى شرح الله صدري للذي شرح الله له صدر أبي بكر وعمر، فقمت: فتتبعت القرآن أجمعه من الرقاع والأكتاف والعسب، وصدور الرجال، حتى وجدت من سورة التوبة آيتين مع خزيمة الأنصاري لم أجدهما مع أحد غيره: ﴿لقد جاءكم رسول من أنفسكم عزيز عليه ما عنتم حريص عليكم﴾ إلى آخرهما. وكانت الصحف التي جمع فيها القرآن عند أبي بكر حتى توفاه الله، ثم عند عمر حتى توفاه الله، ثم عند حفصة بنت عمر) صحيح البخاري ٤٦٧٩

The Sahaba later undertook the compilation of the Holy Quran, a task for which the Prophet (ﷺ) had not shown a precedent. Will those who say that nothing the Prophet (ﷺ) did not do should be done, and that all such things are Bid'ah, also consider the Sahaba's compilation of the Holy Quran as Bid'ah...?

Another incident narrated by Imam Bukhari (﵀):

وفي صحيح البخاري: عن عبد الرحمن بن عبد القاري أنه قال: خرجت مع عمر بن الخطاب ليلة في رمضان إلى المسجد، فإذا الناس أوزاع متفرقون، يصلي الرجل لنفسه، ويصلي الرجل فيصلي بصلاته الرهط، فقال عمر: إني أرى لو جمعت هؤلاء على قارئ واحد لكان أمثل، ثم عزم فجمعهم على أبي بن كعب، ثم خرجت معه ليلة أخرى والناس يصلون بصلاة قارئهم، قال عمر: نعم البدعة هذه الخ) صحيح البخاري ٢٠١٠

When Umar (﵁) saw people praying Tarawih individually, he intended to gather them under one Imam and gathered them under Ubayy ibn Ka'b (﵁), and clarified that this was a "good Bid'ah." (Bukhari.2010)

Explaining this Hadith, Ibn Taymiyyah says:
What Umar (﵁) said was linguistic Bid'ah, not Shar'i. Because linguistic Bid'ah encompasses everything done initially without prior precedent. As for Shar'i Bid'ah, it is matters not indicated by a Shar'i proof.

حسنها، وهذه تسمية لغوية، لا تسمية شرعية، وذلك أن البدعة في اللغة تعم كل ما فعل ابتداء من غير مثال سابق. وأما البدعة الشرعية: فما لم يدل عليه دليل شرعي) اقتضاء الصراط المستقيم٢٧٦)

It is seen in Sahih al-Bukhari (﵀):
During the time of the Prophet (ﷺ), there was only one Adhan (call to prayer) for Jumu'ah (Friday prayer). During the caliphate of Uthman (﵁), when the population increased, the respected [Uthman (﵁)] ordered a second Adhan to be given, and that practice continued. (Bukhari.916)

وفي صحيح البخاري: عن الزهري قال: سمعت السائب بن يزيد يقول: إن الأذان يوم الجمعة، كان أوله حين يجلس الإمام يوم الجمعة على المنبر، في عهد رسول الله ﷺ وأبي بكر وعمر رضي الله عنهما، فلما كان في خلافة عثمان رضي الله عنه وكثروا، أمر عثمان يوم الجمعة بالأذان الثالث، فأذن به على الزوراء، فثبت الأمر على ذلك )صحيح البخاري ٩١٦(

There is consensus that good Bid'ah is permissible and virtuous.
Imam Abu Shama (﵀) says: There is a consensus (Itifaq) among scholars that performing Bid'ah Hasanah is permissible and recommended, and reward is hoped for whoever has a good intention in it. He then extensively argues that the things done in this era for Mawlid (celebration of the Prophet's birthday) are good Bid'ah.

قال الإمام أبو شامة: البدع الحسنة متفق على جواز فعلها والآستحباب لها ورجاء الثواب لمن حسنت نيته فيها وهي كل مبتدع موافق لقواعد الشريعة غير مخالف لشيء منها ولا يلزم من فعله محذور شرعي وذلك نحو بناء المنابر والربط والمدارس وخانات السبيل وغير ذلك من أنواع البر التي لم تعد في الصدر الأول فإنه موافق لما جاءت به الشريعة من اصطناع المعروف والمعاونة على البر والتقوى
ومن أحسن ما ابتدع في زماننا من هذا القبيل ما كان يفعل بمدينة اربل جبرها الله تعالى كل عام في اليوم الموافق ليوم مولد النبي ﷺ من الصدقات والمعروف واظهار الزينة والسرور فان ذلك مع ما فيه من الاحسان الى الفقراء مشعر بمحبة النبي ﷺ وتعظيمه وجلالته في قلب فاعله وشكرا لله تعالى على ما من به من ايجاد رسوله الذي أرسله رحمة للعالمين ﷺ وعلى جميع المرسلين وكان أول من فعل ذلك يالموصل الشيخ عمر بن محمد الملا أحد الصالحين المشهورين وبه اقتدى في ذلك صاحب أربل وغيره رحمهم الله تعالى)الباعث على إنكار البدع والحوادث ٢٤,٢٣(

Explanation of Bid'ah through Hadith

The Prophet (ﷺ) himself clearly teaches that what is to be rejected are newly innovated matters that lack the backing of the Din. In a Hadith reported from Aisha (﵂), it is seen: Whoever innovates something in this matter of ours (Din) that is not part of it, it/that person is to be rejected.

مَنْ أحدثَ في أمرِنا هذا، ما ليس منْهُ، فهوَ رَدٌّ )صحيح البخاري ٢٦٩٧ ( )صحيح مسلم ١٧١٨(

This Hadith has been reported through different narrations.

وفي الرواية الثانية من عمل عملا ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد قال أهل العربية الرد هنا بمعنى المردود ومعناه فهو باطل غير معتد به وهذا الحديث قاعدة عظيمة من قواعد الإسلام وهو من جوامع كلمه ﷺ فإنه صريح في رد كل البدع والمخترعات)شرح المسلم للإمام النووي(

Quoting this Hadith, Imam Sindi (﵀) says: The intention of this Hadith is that newly innovated matters that do not have clear or unclear evidence from the Quran and Sunnah are to be rejected.

قال الإمام السندي: المعنى على ما ذكره القاضي في شرح المصابيح من أحدث في الإسلام رأيا لم يكن له من الكتاب والسنة سند ظاهر أو خفي ملفوظ أو مستنبط فهو رد عليه أي مردود والمراد أن ذلك الأمر واجب الرد يجب على الناس رده ولا يجوز لأحد اتباعه والتقليد فيه وقيل: يحتمل أن ضمير فهو رد لمن أي فذاك الشخص مردود مطرود)حاشية السندي على سنن ابن ماجه ١٠/١(

In the aforementioned Hadith, the Prophet (ﷺ) specifically mentioned "ما ليس منه" (new matters not part of the Din). Therefore, it is clear that giving a new form and appearance to matters that are part of the Din is not Bid'ah. Otherwise, the Prophet's (ﷺ) words "ما ليس منه" would have to be considered inappropriate.

القاعدة: الكلام على قيد زائد على أصل الحكم فمحط الكلام هو ذاك القيد.

In a Hadith narrated by Imam Ibn Majah (﵀), it is seen:
Whoever introduces a Bid'ah with which Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) are not pleased, its sin, and the sin of all those who practice it, will be upon him without any reduction from their sins.

وفي سنن ابن ماجه: قال رسول الله ﷺ: ومن ابتدع بدعة لا يرضاها الله ورسوله، فإن عليه مثل إثم من عمل بها من الناس، لا ينقص من آثام الناس شيئا. )سنن ابن ماجه ٢١٠(

Explaining this Hadith, Imam Sindi (﵀) says: This Hadith indicates that there is Bid'ah with which Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) are pleased.

قال الإمام السندي: قوله (لا يرضاها الله تعالى) هذا تقبيح للبدعة وإلا فكل بدعة كذلك بالمعنى الذي ذكرناه وهو ما لا يوافق أصول الشرع وقيل: فيه تنبيه على أن من البدع ما يرضاها الله ورسوله كالتصنيف وبناء المدارس ونحو ذلك قلت وهذا مبني على أن البدعة مطلق الأمر المحدث بعده) حاشية السندي على سنن ابن ماجه ٩٢/١(

In a Hadith narrated by Imam Muslim (﵀), it is seen:

وفي صحيح مسلم: عن المنذر بن جرير، عن أبيه قال: ... فقال رسول الله ﷺ: من سن في الإسلام سنة حسنة، فله أجرها، وأجر من عمل بها بعده من غير أن ينقص من أجورهم شيء، ومن سن في الإسلام سنة سيئة، كان عليه وزرها، ووزر من عمل بها من بعده من غير أن ينقص من أوزارهم شيء. )صحيح مسلم ١٠١٧(

Whoever introduces a good new practice in Islam will receive its reward and the reward of those who practice it after him, without their rewards being diminished. The same applies to one who introduces a bad practice.
Explaining this Hadith, Imam Nawawi (﵀) says:

قال الإمام النووي: (من سن في الإسلام سنة حسنة فله أجرها) إلى آخره فيه الحث على الابتداء بالخيرات وسن السنن الحسنات والتحذير من اختراع الأباطيل والمستقبحات وسبب هذا الكلام في هذا الحديث أنه قال في أوله فجاء رجل بصرة كادت كفه تعجز عنها فتتابع الناس وكان الفضل العظيم للبادي بهذا الخير والفاتح لباب هذا الإحسان وفي هذا الحديث تخصيص قوله ﷺ كل محدثة بدعة وكل بدعة ضلالة وأن المراد به المحدثات الباطلة والبدع المذمومة) شرح مسلم للإمام النووي ١٠٤/٧(

This Hadith encourages the initiation of good deeds and practices. This Hadith specifies (Takhsis) the general meaning of the noble Hadith, "كل محدثة بدعة وكل بدعة ضلالة" (Every innovated matter is a Bid'ah, and every Bid'ah is misguidance). The intention behind "innovated matter" in that Hadith is reprehensible and false new ideas.

Is everything not present during the time of the Sahaba Bid'ah?

Kerala Salafis often propagate that all matters not present during the era of the Sahaba are reprehensible Bid'ah. Imam Taftazani (﵀) says against those who raise such new arguments:

قال الإمام سعد الدين التفتازاني: ولا يعرفون (المبطلون المتعصبون) أن البدعة المذمومة هو المحدّث في الدين من غير أن يكون في عهد الصحابة والتابعين ولا دلّ عليه الدليل الشرعي, *ومن الجهلة من يجعل كل أمر لم يكن في عهد الصحابة بدعةً مذمومة وإن لم يقم دليل على قبحه تمسكا بقوله عليه الصلاة والسلام : إياكم ومحدثات الأمور " ولا يعلمون أن المراد بذلك هو أن يجعل من الدين ما ليس منه) شرح المقاصد 5 / 232(

"Those who say that everything not present during the era of the Sahaba is Bid'ah are ignorant." (Sharh al-Maqasid: 5/232)

Ibn Taymiyyah reciting Dhikr in a specific manner at a specific time

Umar al-Bazzar, a beloved disciple of Ibn Taymiyyah, says: I used to spend most of the day and much of the night with Ibn Taymiyyah. I used to hear all of Ibn Taymiyyah's Adhkar (remembrances) and recitations.
Ibn Taymiyyah used to recite Surah al-Fatihah repeatedly from Fajr until sunrise.

وَكنت مُدَّة اقامتي بِدِمَشْق ملازمه جلّ النَّهَار وَكَثِيرًا من اللَّيْل وَكَانَ يدنيني مِنْهُ حَتَّى يجلسني الى جَانِبه وَكنت اسْمَع مَا يَتْلُو وَمَا يذكر حِينَئِذٍ فرأيته يقْرَأ الْفَاتِحَة ويكررها وَيقطع ذَلِك الْوَقْت كُله اعني من الْفجْر الى ارْتِفَاع الشَّمْس فِي تَكْرِير تلاوتها

Here, Ibn Taymiyyah designates a specific time for reciting Fatihah and recites it repeatedly.
Did the Prophet (ﷺ) teach such a recitation of Fatihah? Did the Sahaba show it?

Another amusing anecdote about Ibn Taymiyyah!!

Another disciple, Ibn Abd al-Hadi, narrates from Ibn Taymiyyah: I used to recite many Tafsirs (Quranic exegeses) and pray, "يا معلم آدم وإبراهيم علّمني" (O Teacher of Adam and Ibrahim, teach me). Often, I would go to empty mosques and places, place my face on the ground, and pray to Allah, “يا معلم آدم وإبراهيم علّمني” (O Teacher of Adam and Ibrahim, teach me). (Al-'Uqud al-Durriyyah li Ibn Abd al-Hadi)
Here, the disciple has recorded that Ibn Taymiyyah used to regularly make a specific Dua in a specific manner for a specific need.
